Election Information

Candidate Qualifications:

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

No person shall be eligible to be elected to, or to be appointed to, fill a vacancy in the office of Council member unless the person:

  • Is a Citizen of the United States at the time of nomination or appointment;
    • Is at least 23 years of age at the time of nomination or appointment;
    • Is a registered elector at the time of nomination or appointment;
    • and has been a resident of the City, for one year immediately preceding such election or appointment.
      • Any person who is a resident of the City, or of any area annexed to, or consolidated with the City for the required length of time, as herein provided, shall be deemed to meet the resident requirements.
  • No person who has been, or who is convicted of, embezzlement, bribery, solicitation of bribery, perjury, subornation of perjury, or any offense involving fraud, shall be capable of holding the office of Council member.
  • A person who holds a position as a board or commission member, or is an officer or employee of the City, shall be deemed to have resigned such position upon taking office as Council member.

Regular Municipal and Special Election Information:

The City of Edgewater's Regular Municipal Elections and Special Elections are administered by the City Clerk under provisions of the Charter, the Municipal Code of the City of Edgewater and the Colorado election laws. 

Edgewater's Municipal Elections are non partisan, that is, persons are elected to office without consideration of political party affiliation,  and are held every two (2) years, in odd-numbered years. Elections are held on the first Tuesday in November for the purpose of voting on the City's elected officials.

Edgewater's Regular Municipal Elections are coordinated with the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder's Office.

The seat of Mayor is elected to a two-year term and the City Council seats are elected to a four-year term.  Terms of office begin at the first regular City Council meeting following certification of election results.

All election forms are obtained from the City Clerk's Office and all filings are made therein.

Other Edgewater elections may also be held at various times.

  • Ballot issues, those which relate to financial matters such as taxes or debt can be voted on at the Regular Municipal election.
  • Non-financial matters may be voted on in November of both odd and even numbered years.
  • Special Elections may be called by the City Council and may be held on any date other than the City's regular election date.
    • Special lections are called by a City Council Resolution adopted at least thirty (30) days prior to the election date.

Voter Registration:

To register to vote, you must be:

  • 18 years of age by the next election day
  • A Citizen of the United States
  • A resident at your present address for at least 30 days prior to the election
